Ruth and John had their wedding ceremony in Roma Street Parklands on 8th July 2016.
Ruth and her bridesmaids got ready at her parents’ house in Norman Park, and Ruth wore a one of a kind masterpiece designed and made by Susan Ogg. Ruth tells: “Susan does original boutique dresses, nothing off the rack or reproduced twice. We originally began the planning such as dress style and material about 10 months before the wedding; however, the actual making of the dress didn’t start until 12 weeks before our big day. Susan was meticulous with every detail; she was always straight forward in her approach and willing to work with my ideas and concerns every step of the way!”
The girls had their hair done by Tomadon’s Mobile Hairdressing and makeup by Cherisse Makeup Artistry, and the stunning bouquets and hair flowers were by Lynch Market Flowers. John and his groomsmen wore suits by Studio Italia from David Jones.
The beautiful art on their invitations were made by Ruth’s mum who is a botanical artist while Ruth herself designed the rest. Their bonbonnieres were jars of home made mango chutney made by John with an old recipe he learned years ago, and he used mangoes and chillies grown in their own backyard.
Celebrant Peter Evans took the time to meet with the couple on more than one occasion to get to know Ruth and John before the ceremony. “His delivery of the ceremony was the perfect touch of heartfelt truth, humour, love and celebration,” Ruth and John said. During the ceremony the wedding rings were passed around on a wooden coaster that Ruth and John had made from the wood from their backyard.
After the ceremony we walked through the beautiful Roma St Parklands and took relaxed and casual photos of Ruth and John and their bridal party.
The reception was at LightSpace in Fortitude Valley, which the happy couple said “was a perfect central location and we both fell instantly in love with its rustic industrial look. When deciding on a venue we really wanted one that we could use our own wine and catering supplies. This was important to us because John’s good friend has a fantastic boutique wine store in Brisbane (The Wine Experience) and we knew we wanted him to supply for us. I was also hopeful that my brother’s catering company could supply the catering.” They also had a photo ladder display, and Ruth tells “I have always been interested in family history and because John and I were getting married on my parents 49th wedding anniversary I decide that I wanted to get photos of both of our parents and grandparent on their wedding day. The pictures I found were so gorgeous I had the six of them framed and displayed. I also hung a bunch of family photos from John and me growing up and then a few photos from the years we have been together. I thought it added a great personal touch.”
The newlyweds made a spectacular entrance in their red 1962 Datsun Fair Lady convertible which drove directly into the venue with their guests standing around throwing rose petals! “No one other than our bridal party and MC (my brother) knew how we were arriving, so seeing the surprised and elated expressions on our guests’ faces while they threw roses everywhere was amazing. It felt glamorous and unique and was just so much fun, I wish I could rewind the experience again and again,” Ruth remembers.
The food was delicious and plentiful and was provided by The Art or Catering, owned by Ruth’s older brother. The beautiful cake was created by Cakes by Simone and the cake topper was by Lynch Market Flowers. The reception was cocktail style, people enjoyed mingling and looking at the gorgeous decorations while the food was being served around, and the speeches were beautiful and emotional.
